Rec Basketball League (Grades 3-6)
We will have a parent information night on Wednesday, October 21st, in the FHS Cafeteria, starting promptly at 6pm. This meeting will cover all things youth basketball for the 2026-27 season.
Grade 3-6 Rec Basketball
Through practice, clinics, and games, this local league provides and promotes a safe, recreational basketball program for youth in grades 3 – 6 throughout RSU5. Focus is on good sportsmanship, developing strong playing skills, and promoting friendly relationships among the players, coaches, referees, and parents. Our main objective is to promote sportsmanship, integrity, and fairness while giving athletes the opportunity to have fun and find their own success.
Teams will practice once during the week in the evening, and have a Saturday morning/early afternoon game. Games will be held in Durham, Freeport, Yarmouth (3rd/4th) and Brunswick (5/6th). When you register, you will be asked where you would prefer to practice. You may choose either Durham/Pownal or Freeport, and we will do all that we can to place your child on a team that practices in that town. If you have a specific day or time that you CANNOT practice, please indicate this when signing up. NEW this year, we will work with coaches to offer a structured, open-gym style practice for each division (all players in the division will be welcome to attend, provided we have enough adult supervision). Practices begin as soon as November 16th, with games likely beginning on December 5th. A specific practice and game schedule will be online once teams are created, and further communication will come directly from your coach.
All 5th and 6th Grade players are invited to attend the Travel Basketball Evaluation Night taking place the week of October 26th. More information can be found at this link (specifics will be updated in the coming weeks). Even if you do not want to join a travel team, this will be a great experience to learn from the FHS Varsity Coaches, practice skills and get shots up before the season begins, and see what the next level of basketball is all about. We encourage all 5/6th graders to attend!
Sign up by November 2 to be guaranteed a spot on a team. After that date, players will be added to the waiting list and a CP staff member will reach out regarding team placement. In an effort to create balanced teams, we cannot accommodate all specific team/coach requests.
Parent coaches and assistants are needed in order to run this program.

Mud Season Madness (Grades 2-4 Extension)
This is an optional program open to any 2nd, 3rd or 4th grader who wishes to extend their season. This program is not open to players that did not play basketball in the winter leading up to the program.
Mud Season Madness is designed to provide players with additional gym time to develop and compete. Players will be grouped by age and/or ability to ensure an appropriate learning environment. For 2nd graders, the focus will be on introducing game-like situations and preparing them for games as they enter 3rd grade the following year (bridging the gap between Little Hoopsters and the Rec season). For 3rd/4th graders, there will be an opportunity for teams to participate in tournaments. Anyone interested in competing in a tournament will be able to do so, however please be aware that playing time will not be equal (each player will still be guaranteed playing time).
Sign up by January 1st to be placed on a Mud Season Madness Extension team. In order to register for tournaments and plan logistics, we will not accept any registrations after January 1st.
Please email <cp@rsu5.org> with any questions or concerns related to our Basketball programs.
